Blue carts have been delivered to almost half of the customers in Phase 3 of the transition to biweekly recycling. Remaining customers should receive their new recycling carts before Labor Day. Please remember that new carts will not be serviced until the first green-shaded day on your recycling calendar. If you received a blue cart this summer but did not get a calendar, visit the City's website to find your service day. If you prefer, call Solid Waste Services at 919-996-6890 to have a calendar mailed to you. Keep your green bin to use inside your house or drop it off at your closest City fire station during the month of September.

Wake County and Radio One are partnering to keep our environment clean and safe. Join volunteers from 86it.com, The Light 103.9, and Foxy 104/107 for a community litter cleanup on Saturday, August 18 from 10 am until 12 pm. Volunteers will meet in the parking lot of the Food Lion at 6213 Rock Quarry Road. Participants must be at least 18 years old or accompanied by an adult. All volunteers will receive refreshments and a T-shirt. Have you ever wondered where your trash goes? Find out by touring the South Wake Landfill. Wake County Environmental Services will offer free, guided tours on Monday, September 10. Travel to the top of this fascinating community resource to see how trash is buried. You'll learn how trash is turned into energy. You will also see the County's drop-off areas for recycling electronics and oyster shells.

The next time you venture to Glenwood South in search of a cupcake or cocktail, take a look at Raleigh's latest recycling innovation. Nearly twenty BigBelly Solar Compactors are being installed in this downtown district. The solar-powered trash cans compact waste to save space, alerting Solid Waste Services employees when they need to be emptied. Next to the trash cans, you'll find receptacles for recycling plastic bottles, metal cans, glass bottles and paper. Food, plastic bags and polystyrene (a.k.a. Styrofoam) belong in the trash can, not in the recycling container. What do you think of the BigBelly cans?
