Thanks for sharing! I saw in the N&O that many on the school board are unhappy with
the number of reassignments and that the (now-former) superintendent released this plan to
the public before the school board had a chance to review it or provide input.
(Which suddenly made the recent upheaval make a lot more sense... the last thing Wake
needed was more outraged parents whose addresses face reassignment again. And without any
context for the plan, that was the predictable result. I really wish the superintendent
and board would work with a panel of teachers and parents for advice on engaging with
parents and teachers!)
I was surprised to learn that Powell's enrollment had swelled so much this year. Where
did the influx of students come from?

they are moving away from nodes and into neighborhood designations. watch this video of
the presentation of the new plan at a school board meeting for more details.
They are not making anyone change schools, according to the video, but rather letting
people finish where they are and the change to the new districting. The video was highly
informative (though not riveting).

This is strange considering we are in the same 'node' 75.1:

In fact it looks like assignment is now based by neighborhood and not node? I plugged in
2213 vs 2219 Rumson (neighbors) and discovered that's the line.
The top of the hill on Rumson shifts to Lockwood and those addresses stay at Powell, but
the woodcrest addresses on Rumson along with the homes on Barksdale are reassigned to
Joyner as well despite being in the same node.
Homes are listed by their subdivision under Property Description in real estate data
account summary. Are nodes out now?

Wake County's newly proposed draft school assignment plan divides Conn
Elementary's traditional base among three schools.
Starting from Lions Park on Bennett Street, all of the Belvidere Park and Woodcrest
addresses I have spot-checked are now zoned to Joyner Elementary. This includes houses
along Plainview Avenue that adjoin Conn's property, sitting right at the school's
rear-entrance crosswalk. In addition, the Mordecai and Pilot Mills neighborhoods, also
long a part of Conn's base, are now zoned to Underwood Elementary.
These assignments ignore walk zones and neighborhood boundaries (both cited as zoning
priorities), add unnecessary transportation costs, and undermine the strong and growing
neighborhood commitment to Conn.
This issue is of obvious importance to families with young children. It also has
implications for continuity and connections across our neighborhoods and affects whether
they are seen as appealing places to live.
The county is seeking feedback on the proposed changes. Now is the time to unite around
our neighborhood school. Whether you are a parent or just interested in our community,
please share your thoughts on maintaining Conn's base with the school board through
