Animal Control in Wake County (and specifically Raleigh) is a joke. I called them to get a dog in my backyard on multiple occasions, including one time when the dog was ASLEEP. They showed up the last time and were actually able to get there while the dog was still there sleeping, and when she approached it with a leash, it moved a few feet away from her and she said she wasn't going to be able to get it. And left.

I complained (loudly) to the city, and Animal Control brought a trap to my backyard and left it there for a few weeks, but of course the dog went nowhere near it, and we didn't see the dog for a few weeks before it started coming around again, so that was the end of that.

I no longer walk or run in the neighborhood because of all of this nonsense. Everyone who walks through the neighborhood regularly carries a stick, in case they have to beat off a dog. It's a nightmare, and honestly, I'm fed up enough about it to just want to move.

I don't understand why we can't get any funding for regular dogcatcher patrols in the neighborhoods with this problem, like most other cities have.

Or why the existing handful of county animal control officers don't even have adequate equipment on their trucks to pick up skittish strays.

Strangely enough - I did not post that last bit about the UK - I'm not sure how it came from my email.  I have attached a copy of Wake County Ordinances, many of which are not being consistently enforced.  I don't want to attack animal control because I knwo that the amount of calls they receive in relation to the amount of staff they have is ridiculous.  However, If you go through some of these ordinances, it's not happening.  is there some way as a community we can work proactively with Animal Control to address the issue?  Perhaps they can come to a CAC meeting?

Breed-specific legislation would be of absolutely no help with our community's problem, which involves everything from St. Bernards to Rottweilers to pit bulls to boxers to mutts. As others have rightly pointed out, it is the owners that are the problem, not the dog breed. Personally, I love pit bulls, and I know many good pit bull owners who don't deserve to lose their dogs because of other people's irresponsibility.

May I weigh in on this topic? Simply said, these dogs are owned by irresponsible  dog owners. Several weeks ago my 7year old grandchild was riding his bike in front of my home when a dog ran up on him, barking and showing teeth, terrifying him and his dad  who held the dog at bay with a rake. Animal control officer was called , who in turn called RPD.
Dog owners evidently "thought/said" the dog had simply escaped the back door and was just running around. HAHA funny? Not to us.
Meanwhile, we continue to cleanup and/or step in that dog's "business" all along the front of our homes!
Hats off to dog owners who respect their community! There are some out there!

Dear all,

The stray dog issue is certainly terrifying and is a huge concern.  I know it's not much comfort right this instant, but this is one of the many things on my list of issues to address with the newly formed Longview Park neighborhood watch.

FYI, if you live in the Longview area, are interested in the neighborhood watch, and were unable to attend this week's interest meeting, please email me with your name, address, and phone #, and I will add you to the database.

Thank you.

On September 26, our Black Lab, named Holly, was attacked in our yard by this Saint Bernard.  The dog lives at 2263 Rumson Road. It came under two wire fences to get to our yard.  Holly lay down when the dog came at her.  My husband was in the yard with Holly and was able to get the dog off her before any damage was done.  The dog turned toward him growling and ran away.  Shortly thereafter, my husband heard a child crying and went to check it out.  Another neighbor with her small daughter in a stroller had been walking her two dogs on the Greenway.  The Saint Bernard attached her dogs as they were coming back on to Raleigh Blvd.  Ron scared the dog off .
On Friday evening, November 11, I heard our neighbor screaming in her fenced-in back yard.  The Saint Bernard  is usually  chained in the back yard next to her.  Ron got Holly back in the house while I went over to help her.  The Saint Bernard had come under her fence and attached her two small dogs.  She had both little dogs in her arms with the Saint Bernard trying to get them out of her grasp.  I took one of her dogs and she the other.  In the meantime, a man and two girls (owners of the dog?) came to our aid and were able to get the dog back home.  Teresa took the dogs to the Animal Hospital.  One had a broken front leg and crushed foot and was to undergo surgery on the foot today.  The other dog had a punctured lung and bruised kidney.  Before the surgery on the foot Teresa's Vet bill has already been $l,200.00.  This individual is Teresa Washburn.  She lives at 2259 Rumson Road.  Teresa welcomes any help in getting the dog removed.  If anyone can help, please call her.
Animal Control came for both instances.  The first time, they took the dog to the pound and they had to pay to get it back.  A lot of people are now involved in trying to have something done to make this area safer.
Thanks for your interest.,                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                              Judy Stacy                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                   2255 Rumson Road

Hey,

I've called animal control when the same dog charged another walker in early September.

A few weeks later your neighbor two doors down had it trapped in his backyard. It seems to like the City's Greenway/easement lot by our homes?

In October Travis found it at our gate trying to enter into our backyard, but it took off up the hill when he approached it.

The owners drive a jeep that is golden or beige and will occasionally drive by looking for it.
I am not sure where they live, but it must be close by.

Over on Rumson Rd, we have been dealing with a Saint Bernard that escapes from her yard and viciously attacks other dogs (4 dogs that I know of  have ended up in the emergency room so far). Fortunately, she has not hurt any humans at this point. We have contacted the police and animal control and are in the process of pursuing those avenues to make our neck of the woods safer for walking again and are trying to collect as much information as possible.

My husband witnessed the tail end of an attack on a slim medium-sized black dog by this Saint Bernard on or around September 24th, but the owner walked home and he didn't get her name. If you are that owner or know her email address, we would be grateful for the information. Additionally, if your dog has recently been attacked on or near Rumson by a Saint Bernard, please let me know. Thank you for your time.
