thanks Emrys.  Yes it is a very common occurance for criminals to check unlocked cars for valuables (phones, GPS, money, wallet, etc) so lock your cars everyone!  This happened to my grandfather and they usually sweep whole neighborhoods.

Subject: [longview-park-community-watch] Theft from Motor Vehicle on Stevens Rd

Hi All,

I just wanted to alert everyone to a theft that occurred to one of my
neighbors in the 2300 block of Stevens Rd last night. A GPS unit was
taken from a car between 7-11pm. The car was unlocked, but parked
right next to the house (not on the street). The GPS unit was not
visible (stored in a compartment in the console) and other contents of
the car were searched for valuables. I'm speculating, but it could be
possible that the perpetrator(s) were opportunistically checking cars
to see if they were unlocked. The theft has been reported to RPD.

If anyone saw anything or experienced a similar theft last night,
please report it.

Thanks.
