Learn about Tardigrades with Canopy Meg
August 6 and 7
9am- 12pm
Bring your moss and lichens to the student-scientist table outside of the Biodiversity lab
in the NRC to have your garden water bears identified.
While little is known about their requirements for life on Earth, water bears can be used
as an efficient bio-indicator of habitat quality and global environmental change.
August 8
1pm, 5pm
Undergraduate students from across the country have been working with Senior Scientist at
the Museum, Dr. Meg Lowman, to define the taxonomy and distribution of water bears in tree
canopies as part of a larger NSF-funded research project. These students will present
their research findings in a series of short talks in the SECU Daily Planet theater,
located in the Nature Research Center.
August 9
10am-4pm
People interested in learning how to take their own tree-top tardigrade samples can join
Canopy Meg at Prairie Ridge Ecostation, the Museum's outdoor educational facility in
west Raleigh. No climbing experience necessary; subject to weather.
