Hi neighbors,

I'm sorry to hear these burglaries are happening in such frequency.  Kicking in the back doors reminds me of some events three years ago.  I dug up this email from a thread that was forwarded to me in June 2009:

Folks, this is a good reminder to strengthen your door hardware if you
haven't already. It's easy and takes about five minutes!

The typical screws used for attaching a lock's strikeplate to the door
frame are less than 3/4" long. This makes the door easy to kick in as
these screws easily fail.

Replacing these with #10 wood screws that are 2" to 3" long will
significantly strengthen your doors. The longer screws will anchor the
strikeplate into the stud behind the door frame and not just the door
frame itself. Anyone kicking in the door better have an iron heel!

I have no way of knowing if anyone has tried to kick in our doors and we have two very ferocious-sounding dogs, so I cannot attest to how effective this is, but we did this after hearing about all of this and it certainly made me feel a little more in control.  If they've got to work harder to kick in a door, maybe they'll at least come away with an injured ankle and take more time for someone to hear something.

Hi All,

I was burglarized in the exact same fashion on July 3rd. The crooks took the exact same things, I'm convinced these are the same crooks. I did not have a security system. Nothing has come of my case; no suspects; no items found. That they have continued to rob our 'hood uncaught is really depressing. :(

Thanks for the update Officer K. Yes, the break ins in this area are getting out of control. Please everyone call in ANYTHING suspicious no matter how small...even if the 911 operator is less than helpful, CALL IT IN. (we've had 911 operators seem very annoyed at us calling in suspicious activity...like nothing has happened, so don't bother calling).

We had a man knock on our door tonight at 8pm...our BACK door, in the dark. He said he had left a card earlier in the day about tree removal and wanted to catch us while we were home. I didn't open the door and told him to get lost....could have been totally innocent, but I don't like people coming to my back door when it's dark out. He was driving a large black pickup truck....seemed to be a middle aged light skin black male, bald. It looked like there may have been someone in the passenger seat of the truck.

Also, I'm assuming you called the police? They need to know about the crime that's been picking up in Longview. This is the 3rd or 4th breakin in the area in about 6 weeks. Officer K, Matt, can we pass this along? Unmarked white van, anyone see it?
