Hello fellow CAC leaders,
I'm forwarding you all a request from Steven Waters of the Raleigh Bicycle
and Pedestrian Advisory Commission. They are asking for a CAC leader to
represent the community on the Pedestrian Transportation Plan steering
committee, and they need to know by next Monday, Sept. 6th. Is anyone
interested? I'm sure Steven can answer any questions folks might have about
time commitment, etc., though it seems fairly light (four meetings spaced
out through 2011).
Please let me know if you're interested, or contact Steven directly at
swaters(a)livingstreets.com or 919-618-0294. Thanks!
Ana

Subject: Raleigh CAC representative on Pedestrian Transportation Plan
steering committee
To: Ana Pardo <acpardo(a)gmail.com>, Alan Wiggs <alanwiggs(a)gmail.com>, Paul
Brandt <paulbrant(a)mindspring.com>
Ana Pardo, Alan Wiggs, Paul Brandt,
I'm writing to ask if you could identify an appropriate person to represent
the Raleigh CAC on a steering committee that will oversee development of the
City of Raleigh's Pedestrian Transportation Plan.
This plan will be used to identify and evaluate critical needs for planning
and implementing pedestrian improvements throughout Raleigh. It will also
update the current process for considering new sidewalk projects, evaluate
intersections for pedestrian safety improvements, and review plans for
complying with the provisions of the Americans with Disabilities Act in
public rights-of-way.
Could you please identify a representative, and ask them to send me an
updated resume, and a short cover letter outlining their background and
perspective, interest in the Pedestrian Transportation Plan, and what they
would like to see from this process? This would really help us to have a
very engaging process, and only involves four meetings spaced throughout
2011.
We would like to recommend your nominee for appointment to the City Council
at their meeting next Tuesday, September 7, 2010. Could you please have
this sent to me by next Monday, September 6, 2010?

What a great story
<http://www.newsobserver.com/2010/10/16/740574/rewarded-for-a-love-of-garden…>
in today's paper about Julia and Robert Mackintosh, the winners of the
Glenwood CAC Neighborhood Recognition Awards. It's on the front page of
the Home & Garden section, with a nice block inviting everyone to the
ceremony.
I encouraged the reporter, Chelsea Kellner, to come to the event to meet
the other winners, each of whom is probably worthy of a story
themselves. Please say hello to her if you see her there and consider
letting your area reporter know more about your winners.

Don't forget that the 4 positions for Wake County Commissioner are at-large
seats. You vote for a candidate in each district, not just your own
district. Terms are staggered, so your district may not be on the ballot
this year, but it's still important for you to vote.
If you want to learn more about the candidates running for the 4 Wake County
Commissioner seats, you can view a video of a candidates forum hosted by the
League of Women Voters of Wake County and WakeUP Wake County here
<http://wakeupwakecounty.org/> .
Early voting has begun and ends on October 30th at 1 PM. More information
here <http://www.wakegov.com/elections/earlyvoting/default.htm> .
You can preview your ballot here

your voter registration information and look for "My Sample Ballot." Other
useful information is also provided.

________________________________
We're gaining momentum here in the Glenwood CAC. Our September meeting
was very well attended and lively, with 17 people who didn't have any
official role and 26 people total.
We were able to spread the word about the good speakers for this meeting
by having the first page of the newsletter be a poster for the meeting
(see below). The newsletter asked people to put the poster up in public
places. Several Ridgewood businesses posted it and at least one
neighborhood church.
Chelsea Kellner wrote a great story about the meeting's theme in the
N&O's Midtown Raleigh News section: In search of a more walkable Raleigh
<http://www.midtownraleighnews.com/2010/10/06/4157/in-search-of-a-more-walka…>,
which I hope will bring more people to the next meeting.
Thought I'd share the poster idea with you in case you'd like to use it
in your CACs.
