Hi all,
As requested at our last RCAC meeting, you can view the key issues from the UDO Advisory Group as presented by Christine Darges to the Planning Commission March 9, 2009 by going to the Raleigh Television Network video list and scrolling down to the Planning Commission's Mar 9, 2009 meeting video. The UDO part starts at 14 minutes and 20 seconds into the meeting. It is worth seeing as background to the zoning ordinance update project. Link to page is below.

_Tryon Road Realignment Petition_
(http://www.renparkonline.com/tryonroad/)
Above is the site of the petition that Southwest CAC is asking everyone to
sign. If you or anyone you know has ever traveled on Tryon Road between
Cary and Garner, you know the potential danger of the railroad bridge and
the curve east of that bridge. We hope you will sign our petition, share
the information with your CAC and all your friends. This section is the only
part of Tryon Road between Cary and Garner that is not four lanes wide and
has been the location of many accidents. Our Road/Bridge Committee is
working hard to make this street safe for everyone who travels on it.
Mary Belle Pate
Chair, SWCAC
PS-The NCDOT person who came to our CAC when the southern portion of the
Beltline was being built told
us that once the Beltline was completed, there would be very little
traffic on Tryon Road. So not true!!!
FYI - for our colleagues to the northwest...

Folks,
Service Raleigh is still looking for projects in Raleigh for volunteers.
Although their registration officially closed on the 10th, they will still
take on additional projects. So if you have an idea in mind that will help
your community, please go to their site (even if early next week) and let
them know.

RCAC leadership,
Following up on NCSUs Service Raleigh discussed at the RCAC last evening:
Partner and Volunteer Registration for Service Raleigh is Open until Friday,
March 5, 2010

Email: serviceraleigh(a)ncsu.edu
Service Raleigh each year offers us the opportunity to work together to
improve our community. On March 27th over 2000 Service Raleigh volunteers
will come together to work on projects throughout Raleigh and they are now
seeking Partners (that would be you) who will identify worthwhile projects
within our community. In the past volunteers have planted 1000s of trees in
our Parks and along our greenways (and will be planting ~400 trees this year
in East Raleigh with Trees Across Raleigh), helped in maintenance of an
historic cemetery, painted & insulated houses, installed low-flow devices in
low income communities, cleaned streams & vacant lots, worked on school
playgrounds you get the idea. This is both a wonderful opportunity and a
wonderful service for us to work together to enhance our community.
Partners would be expected to provide the project including tools,
equipment, special expertise (if needed) and coordination. Service Raleigh
provides the volunteers. Dont forget that the CACs do have some monetary
resources that may be available for supplies, etc.
This is a wonderful service so please look around your community, schools,
churches, open areas and be è creative! & partner with Service Raleigh.
Thanks, Bill

The paragraph below from a resident in the Five Points CAC provides a good
overview of the situation.
Hey Jennifer! Just wanted to give you an update regarding the email you
sent out yesterday about the men going door to door claiming to sell
magazines. My neighbors and I had an encounter with 1 man around 5:00 PM
yesterday. He told us he had to speak to 75 people throughout the day to
improve his public relations and speaking skills. He then asked us a few
odd questions about where we lived, who our neighbors were, etc. Then he
turned on the sales pitch about magazines and showed us a check he claimed
that one of the neighbors had written to him. When we all turned him down,
he kept walking and continued to go to a few other houses. Around 6:30 PM
another man knocked on our door and some of my neighbors'. At 7:15 PM the
cops knocked on my door telling me that they had caught both men (one was
wearing a yellow shirt, the other an orange) and written down all of their
information and checked their records. The cops said they weren't wanted
for anything and did not have violent records, so that that was good;
however, since they technically weren't doing anything illegal they could
not arrest them for anything. The men told the cops they were on their way
out the neighborhood. The cops told me that typically what happens in this
situation is that there is a "boss" that drops off a group of men and then
picks them up later in the evening and that it could go on for up to a week,
so the likelihood that someone will knock on our door again is high. The
policeman advised us to not open the door when the man knocks and he should
go away. He said if the man starts to do anything suspicious, like looking
around the house or anything of that nature, to call the police and they
will be back out. Just thought the neighbors would like to have an update!
