At Wednesday's RCAC meeting, about half the meeting will be dedicated to an update and discussion about the Unified Development Ordinance (UDO). Representatives from the City of Raleigh Planning Department and Code Studio, the lead consultant responsible for writing the new development regulations, will be at the meeting. It will be an important meeting, since it represents a starting point for our and the public's involvement in the review process. Approximately 4 years ago, the City of Raleigh launched a major initiative to update the City's comprehensive plan and development regulations. During the fall of 2009, the City Council approved the 2030 Comprehensive Plan, a document that provides a vision and policies for future growth and development in Raleigh. Work then began on the updating of the City's new development regulations, the actual laws that will guide future development. This document has been labeled the Unified Development Ordinance. The schedule below shows the slippage in the schedule. The original goal of the City Council was to complete the UDO before the 2011 elections. There have always been questions about the City's ability to complete this project within the projected timeline. Code studio has never produced a UDO for another municipality within the timeframe requested by the City of Raleigh.
