NC Conservation Network Public Alert

It’s another week, and we’re following another bone-headed bill in the North Carolina state legislature.

House Bill 3791 (H379) presents a serious threat to anyone who grows a crop in North Carolina without a corporate patent on it, especially organic farmers. Help us protect small farmers and organic foods in NC by opposing H379: http://action.ncconservationnetwork.org/OpposeH379

What’s so bad about H379? If passed, the legislation:

  • would further concentrate corporate control over North Carolina food and farming.

  • would remove authority from local governments to prevent sale and cultivation of plants.

  • could prevent local governments from enacting notification policies to protect organic farmers from genetic contamination from genetically-modified crops.2

This legislation is part of a national campaign by Big Ag companies (like Monsanto) that goes back to 2004, when several counties in California passed ordinances to restrict genetically-modified crops. Since then, bills with near identical language to H379 have passed or been introduced in at least 30 states.

It’s obvious why a bill like this might be good for the likes of big companies that sell genetically modified seeds, but this is a raw deal for local farmers, organic farmers, and local governments.

Tell the state Agriculture department and your state legislators that you oppose H379!

Thanks,
