Event Designed to Enhance Local Government and Citizens Collaboration
CityCamp Raleigh, believed to be the first City-focused "unconference" in
North Carolina, will bring together government, business, neighborhood,
non-profit, and academic representatives to work toward next generation
solutions for Raleigh. The event will be held June 3-5 at two Downtown
Raleigh locations. Admission to the public is free but space is limited.
The City of Raleigh is open to ideas from citizens and technology
professionals (such as web developers, programmers, and app developers) on
how to streamline procedures, share information and create innovative
solutions using the latest technology. "Our citizens are ready for Raleigh
to move forward," Mayor Charles Meeker said. "The technology is successful.
Raleigh is ready to be the worldwide hub for open source."
Sponsors of CityCamp Raleigh include Red Hat inc., WRAL, Alfresco, GovLoop
and Tropo Networks. The event will include speaker presentations, workshop
sessions and breakout sessions. Sessions on June 3 and June 4 will be held
at Vintage 21, 117 S. West St. The June 5 session will be held at The
Stockroom at 230, 230 Fayetteville St. For more information, visit the
CityCamp Raleigh website at
http://citycampral.org.
Confirmed speakers for CityCamp Raleigh are Michael Tiemann, vice president
of Open Source Affairs at Red Hat Inc. and president of the Open Source
Initiative; and Jimmy Goodmon, vice president and general manager of
Capitol Broadcasting New Media Company.
As an "unconference," content for CityCamp is created and organized by
participants and coordinated by facilitators. Participants play an active
role in the event formatted for creative, open exchange geared toward
action.
"The goal of CityCamp Raleigh is to collaboratively generate ideas on how to
apply technology to government problems to create better, more efficient
services for citizens. We want to re-imagine the way the web, applications,
technology, and participation will shape the future of our city," said Jason
Hibbets, planning committee co-chair for the event.
CityCamp Raleigh participants have an opportunity to provide input and share
experiences on crime, trash, water/sewer, property taxes, streets (pot
holes, curbs), storm water management, parks and recreation, transit, and
other issues. Public engagement enhances the government's effectiveness and
improves the quality of its decisions. All citizens are invited to
participate either before or after the conference by posting suggestions and
ideas on the event's website at
http://citycampral.org under "Get Started."
