Affordable and Workforce Housing Expert Panel Discussion
l A broader context of housing affordability in the Triangle l
* With increasing growth in our Triangle region, housing
(un)affordability is affecting a greater swath of the population. Some
policies are in place for affordable and workforce housing, though the
ability to absorb the demand is limited. Further, our workforce is also
being severely strapped by the increasing costs.
* This expert panel discussion seeks first to provide commonly
accepted definitions for affordable and workforce housing.
* The panel will also illustrate different ways that communities
have addressed these issues through government policies and land use
planning.
* Finally, panel experts will discuss the possible short and long
term consequences based on affordable and workforce housing decisions we
make today.

PANEL
Gregg Warren has served as President of DHIC Inc. for 32 years. As the
Triangle's leading provider of affordable housing, DHIC has developed 37
apartment communities offering affordable rents and quality stable housing
to over 3,500 adults and children. DHIC's current pipeline of projects
involves six different rental communities with 800+ apartments. DHIC also
provides homeownership education to first-time homebuyers. Last year 125
customers purchased their first home through DHIC's Homeownership Center.
J.B. Buxton, Principal, Education Innovations Group. JB runs a consulting
practice working with state governments, foundations, and organizations
focused on improving K-12 and postsecondary public education. JB served on
the Raleigh Planning Commission from 2011-2015.
John Hodges-Copple has served as the Planning Director for the Triangle J
Council of Governments (TJCOG) since 1992, where he directs the Council's
work related to land use, transportation, infrastructure, and the
environment. The focus of John's professional work is on developing and
managing partnerships that bring together public, private, university, and
civic organizations to address the opportunities and challenges facing the
growing Research Triangle region of North Carolina. John earned a Master's
degree in Regional Planning from UNC-Chapel Hill and a Bachelor of Science
degree in Engineering from Duke University.
Jim Anthony serves as CEO for Colliers International's Raleigh office in
North Carolina. Jim's responsibilities include company vision and strategy,
client representation, business development, and chief investment
strategist. Jim has one of the most diverse and distinguished commercial
real estate track records in the Southeast. For over 30 years he has worked
with nearly every property type in ten states. Jim graduated from Duke
University and received an MBA from the University of Southern California.
MODERATOR
Mack Paul, Partner, Morningstar Law Group, focuses his practice on zoning,
land use, environmental permitting, public financing, and public policy. He
specializes in regulatory approvals for large, mixed used developments and
urban infill. He also focuses on public-private partnerships (P3s) and
public finance of infrastructure that supports development projects. Mack is
a frequent writer and speaker on urban planning, transportation, and policy
matters.
