Hartmut Jahn introduced his
Neighborship<http://www.neighborship.com/nh/register.php>site to the
Glenwood CAC last night. After the presentation, we spent 30
minutes introducing ourselves, saying why we were involved in the CAC, and
how we might like to communicate using Neighborship or other means.
Nearly everyone was interested in using Neighborship, with a wide variety
of reasons. They wanted to use it to:
- Report events like road closures
- Report crimes and possibly establish patterns that would help the
police solve them
- Make it easy for clubs and hobby groups to communicate
- Strengthen the community by making it easy for neighbors to get
together for walks, carpooling to the farmers' market, and the like
- Find out about and support neighbors in need (people who need meals
brought in, rides to the doctor, etc.)
- Have a way to notify neighbors about micro businesses (crafts for
sale, yard work)
- Get the word out about yard sales, free kittens, and more
- Keep neighborhood connections strong during the winter months, when we
bump into each other less
One neighbor said she'd nearly moved to Cameron Park instead of Glenwood
because she wanted to be in a neighborhood with strong communication. In
that way, a system like this could even increase property values.
The Glenwood CAC will try Neighborship for two months and then vote on
adopting it as a CAC at our May meeting.
You may want to get started on this with your own CAC right away or wait
for our report. Hartmut is very easy to work with and will get you started
quickly.
I'm hoping that the Glenwood CAC trial will go very well and that the RCAC
will invite Hartmut to speak.
We had fourteen CAC members at this non-zoning meeting and three more of
the usual attendees had a conflict but had wanted to come. We even had a
new young resident come who wants to get involved. Was it the postcard? Was
it Neighborship? I don't know, but I'm happy with the result.
