I had this happen at a home I owned that was vacant. I was told that people install them when theirs have been inactivated due to nonpayment or they are in condemned homes that would not be able to get service. It seemed hard to believe but they simply came out to replace it, she said it happens all the time (shocking!). At least one home in the 1200 block of Brookside was missing its meter yesterday afternoon, the one at the vacant daycare at 808 Edmund Street is missing, and six are missing from the vacant Shoppes at Brookside at 1000 Brookside Drive. With the exception of the Shoppes meters, it appears these meters were removed in haste. All covers were left open and wires were ripped out in two cases. For this reason I believe this wasn't approved work (the city attorney tends to frown on situations that might create broken ankles). If you see anyone working around water meters, especially around vacant businesses, please call the Public Utilities department at 829-1930 and ask if it is a legitimate service call.
