Hey everyone, Attached you will find a summary from our meeting last week. Thanks to everyone who came out and participated; it was nice to speak with you. The meeting attendance at this meeting was a little lower than expected (15-20), but we had some snafus in the notification process for this meeting. I will have those problems worked out by our next meeting in June. We had a great discussion with Mac Smith of the Storm Water Utility about the Adopt-a-Stream program. A lot of us neighbors are interested in keeping the creeks in our area clean. This is a great opportunity to do so. I have all the information to start this process. Do I have any volunteers to help get this effort going? We also had a great discussion with Officer Bowen of the Animal Control Unit. She gave us some good information for our neighbors as they face animal control issues in the area. See the summary for more information. Lastly, Officer Kryskowiak joined us to give the Police report. Thanks once again to Officer Krysko for joining us and talking to our group. Our next order of business is to finish creating our network of block captains. If you are interested in becoming a block captain or just finding out more information, please contact me directly. Hey Matt and Jillian, I'm sorry to hear about the trouble you've been having. I will send you an invitation from the google group we use for communications. Unfortunately, I cannot directly add members to the list due to how google handles group membership. If you click the link in the invitation email, you will be added to the group. Our next neighborhood-wide meeting will be on Tuesday, June 12, 2012 at 7:00 PM, but there will be other opportunities to participate between now and then. Meeting Reminder - Longview Park Community Watch - Tuesday, March 13 at 7:00 PM

Hey everyone, Please join us the Enloe High School Media Center tonight at 7:00 PM for a Longview Park Community Watch meeting. After an initial organizing meeting in November and a number of preparatory gatherings over the past couple of months, we're having our first, official meeting. Tonight we'll have a representative from the Storm Water Utility to talk to us about the Adopt-a-Stream program and how our group can participate. We'll also have a representative from the Animal Control Department to discuss animal control issues in our area, and as our friend, Officer Kryskowiak from the Raleigh Police Department will be there as well. Meeting Announcement

Hey everyone, We will be having our first official meeting of the Longview Park Community Watch next week on March 13 at 7:00 PM in the Media Center at Enloe High School. At the first meeting we will have a representative from Animal Control to discuss the animal control issues we face in our area and a representative from the City of Raleigh Storm Water Utility to discuss the Adopt-a-stream program and how our group can participate. It will also be a pleasure to welcome Officer Kryskowiak to share local crime statistics with the group. Some of you may now him from the ECAC meetings or the community at large. I will also give the group an update on Community Watch group in general, including upcoming meeting schedules and the block captain organization effort. Please come out on Tuesday of next week to help us kickoff the Community Watch group together. It's a great way to meet your neighbors! Reminder: Longview Branch Adopt-A-Stream Cleanup // 3-6-12 @ 2:40PM

Neighbors, This Tuesday, March 6th at 2:40PM the Enloe National Honor Society is conducting a cleanup along their adopted stretch of Longview Branch (the stream that runs along Bertie Dr.). The group meets at the corner of Bertie Dr. and the access road for Enloe's rear parking lot (http://g.co/maps/j5k7t). A few of you expressed interest in participating when I sent out the first announcement a few weeks ago. I still plan to help out for an hour or so and hope that a few of you will too. My husband was mowing our yard at 2119 Millbank Street on Tuesday while I was out of town when a pit bull from our neighbor's backyard dog-breeding operation broke through the wooden privacy fence that serves as his enclosure and launched himself in attack mode over our four-foot chain link fence at Mike, who managed to escape by jumping the gate into the driveway. Our bulldog Chance came tearing out of the house straight toward the pit bull, whose name is Deebo, grabbed him by the chest, and pinned him to the ground. The melee that ensued involved Mike beating Deebo over the skull with a rake handle in hopes of scaring him off, all while screaming for help and dialing 911. It also involved enough blood to make Mike queasy. When Raleigh Police and Animal Control arrived, the dog's owner ranted about what terrible people we are. "Why do you always take their side?" she shouted at them, referring to the half-dozen or so times we've had to call the authorities because her dogs escaped from their yard or tried to break through our back fence or barked and howled outside all night while in heat, leading to various warnings and citations. Community Police Officer James Kryskowiak is helping compile the complete record. Mike is now out of town on business, so I spoke with Animal Control Supervisor Alford today. He reported that my neighbor was cited for allowing her dog off the property, and said the investigation into whether my neighbor's dog should be designated as dangerous continues. As I told Supervisor Alford, given that the dog attempted to attack my husband on our property and menaced us previously when it's gotten loose, it is clearly dangerous and needs to be secured appropriately before someone gets seriously hurt. Not everyone is capable of leaping over a gate in a single bound. At this point, though, Animal Control says they cannot compel the owner to build a more secure enclosure. My neighbor did have workers there this week shorting up her wooden privacy fence, but the dog has broken out of this type of fencing before. It has even ripped through our chain link in places along our property line, requiring multiple patches. The good news is that while our dog did require veterinary care for puncture wounds and cuts on his face, he will be OK. The neighbor did not offer to pay for the damage she caused, however, so we will be exploring our legal options. If anyone has any recommendations for a good animal-law attorney in Raleigh, please pass them along. In the meantime, please be careful if you are in the area of Millbank Street and Downing Road. Until this dog is secured with something more than wooden pickets, we remain at risk.
