City of Raleigh - Solid Waste Services
Recycling News and Events
December 2012
December Collection Changes
Curbside collection schedules will be adjusted in observance of Christmas and New Year's Day. There will be no garbage, recycling or yard waste pickup on Tuesday, December 25. All routes will be serviced one day later. Residents scheduled for Friday collection will be served on Saturday.
Solid Waste Services will not work on Tuesday, January 1. All routes will be serviced one day later than usual. For details, visit http://links.govdelivery.com/track?type=click&enid=ZWFzPTEmbWFpbGluZ2lkPTIw… and search “holiday schedule.”
Recycle Your Christmas Tree
Give your live Christmas tree a chance at reincarnation…as mulch or compost! Solid Waste Services will collect trees as part of weekly yard waste collection. Separate your tree from its stand and remove all lights, ornaments and other decorations. Place the tree at the curb no later than 7:00 am on your service day.
Apartment managers should call Solid Waste Services at 919-996-6890 to schedule tree collection for their communities.
Waste Less this Holiday
Americans throw away more garbage between Thanksgiving and New Year’s Day than during any other time of the year. You can have a joyful celebration without producing a lot of garbage. Check out our Holiday Waste Reduction Tips for an extensive list of ideas, from giving carbon offsets to using cloth bags instead of wrapping paper. Visit our web page and click on "Reduce Holiday Waste!" under News and Events.
What’s your best green holiday tip? We want to hear from you! Contact Bianca Howard at Bianca.howard(a)raleighnc.gov or 919-996-6872 to share your idea. We’ll compile your suggestions and use them to freshen up our list.
Make a Green Resolution
January brings cold mornings and a renewed desire to live better in the New Year. Losing weight or getting more sleep are common New Year’s Resolutions. A healthy body is important, but consider resolving to support a healthy local economy. Recycle all that you can; it supports more than 15,000 jobs at 700 separate businesses in North Carolina.
Are you ready for a green challenge in 2013? Keeping one of these resolutions may also keep more money in your wallet!
1. Attend a Sustainable Home workshop to learn ways to cut your energy bill.
2. Upgrade your tired throne to a WaterSense toilet.
3. Visit the WaterWise garden on Martin Street to see drought-resistant plants that can beautify your yard.
Big Belly Brings Big Savings to Downtown
Solar-powered trash containers are keeping downtown “clean and green.” More than 20 Big Belly Solar Compactors have replaced trash cans along streets in Glenwood South and the Fayetteville Street area. These innovative cans help Solid Waste Services workers save time and fuel by reducing the number of times garbage has to be collected. Recycling units adjacent to the compactors allow pedestrians to recycle paper, cans, and plastic and glass bottles. Hear why business owners in Glenwood South welcome the Big Belly in this video.
Environmental Award Nominations Open
The City of Raleigh is accepting nominations for the 2013 Environmental Awards. Now in its sixth year, “the program recognizes individuals and organizations that have demonstrated a commitment to the environment in the community.” Nominations may be made online by February 15, 2013.

Hey folks,
This is a friendly reminder for the meeting we'll be holding Thursday night. Please join us. A previous email regarding the meeting is below for your review. I look forward to seeing you tomorrow night.
As a followup to the burglary problem solving session held in late October, the Longview Park Community Watch is holding a workshop on December 13th at 7PM in the Enloe HS Media Center. While this meeting will focus on actions within Longview Park, it is open to anyone who is interested in participating from the broader East CAC area. The issues we will discuss affect all areas, so all neighbors are welcome.
At our meeting in October, we laid a foundation of defining the crime problems in our area and causes for those problems. The upcoming workshop will build on that foundation by focusing on solutions and actions that support those solutions. The format will be a true working meeting (no presentations). Using the Open Space format, participants will list their ideas or solutions, create small discussion groups and, working in the groups, develop plans for action to create a safer neighborhood. This is an open and interactive meeting format, so everyone will have a chance to participate.
To help setup initial working groups, we need those who attended the problem solving session to report out on their homework assignment, which was to develop a list of causes and solutions that connect with our problem definition. See and respond to Matt Leary's post to the crime prevention committee via Nextdoor:https://eastraleighcac.nextdoor.com/group/3501/
If you don't have a Nexdoor account, sign up. It's easy.
And since it is holiday season, please bring a simple dessert (cookies, cupcakes, etc.) to share during the workshop, but if you can't bring one don't let that stop you from attending!
Regards,Matt LearyChairperson, Longview Park Community Watch
FYI: There was a small white miniature poodle with a red collar on Bertie on the New Bern Ave. side. She seemed to know where she was going, so I left her alone. Hopefully no one is missing the little one.
- Karen

I will do my best to get the info out much quicker I am sorry for such a delay and the bad thing about is I'm a stickler about these things myself. My schedule sometimes doesn't allow me to respond or read all the e-mails that come thru, I'm involved in much more than this and I'm not always in front of a computer. You can always go on the COR web-page to get updated info also www.raleighnc.gov Thank you for your patience.

Debbie:
This email, sent to cac leadership intended for distribution, was not forwarded for 7 days. Today is the 10th and the first of the four workshops. I and many other interested individuals will not be able to attend because the information was received too late.
Your second email show a delay of 5 days (Holiday schedule). I would appreciate a faster turnaround on all City of Raleigh announcements.
Thank you, Sue
