From Murphy to Manteo:
An Artist's Scenic Journey
Studies, sketches and preliminary drawings
by J. Chris Wilson
September 6-29
Study, View from Walnut Hollow, Burke County
Study, Whitewater Falls, Transylvania County
ABOUT THIS SHOW:
In 2007, NC artist, J. Chris Wilson undertook the enormous project of painting a
"portrait" of NC comprised of 100 landscape paintings of scenes and vistas along
Highway 64 that runs from Murphy to Manteo. "I set out to expand the scale and
complexity of my vision for post-abstract Southern realist painting and create an epic
panorama from the Blue Ridge Mountains to the Outer Banks." He is nearly finished and
has over 50 works currently on display in various sites around the Capital.
The Nature Art Gallery is pleased to be exhibiting 30 or so of the studies, sketches and
preliminary drawings he did in preparation for painting his very large landscape
canvases. All these studies and sketches will be for sale.
The History Museum is showing a dozen of the finished oil paintings in their lobby. The
Departments of Environment and Natural Resources and Cultural Resources are also
displaying paintings and others are on view at the State Library and the House Chamber of
the NC Legislative Building.
This is a very exciting project on a grand scale and we suggest coming here to view
thestudies and sketches and then taking a walking tour of the Capital to see how they
inform the paintings. We will provide information about all
the exhibition sites and hours for each here at the Gallery
for interested patrons.
ABOUT THE ARTIST:
Wilson has been painting the North Carolina landscape for over 35 years. He has also been
continuously exhibiting his work during the same period. He was on the faculty of Barton
College 1974-2012 and is now professor emeritus and artist-in-residence there. visit his
