ACTION
ALERT
BUDGET
VOTE!
Monday, June
16th
The public spoke in
volumes.
There was a terrific turnout at last
week's budget public hearing. For more
than two and a half hours, teachers, retired teachers, bus
drivers, teacher assistants and other community members
spoke in support of the School Board's proposed budget.
There is overwhelming, bipartisan
support for the $39 million request that will
raise salaries for all WCPSS employees and invest in other
critical academic programs.
It's time to turn out again.
There is talk among some
Commissioners about raising the local salary supplement for
teachers by $250. This falls far short of the
School Board's request (see
below).
The Board of Commissioners will
vote to approve the fiscal year 2015
budget at their next scheduled meeting,
on Monday, June 16th at 2:00 PM at
the Wake County Justice Center, 300 South Salisbury Street
Raleigh in room 2700. (Click here for parking and other
info.)
Let's demonstrate our endorsement of the
proposed budget by attending the meeting. Please bring your
friends and neighbors in a show of support for
our
public schools!
A reminder
of what's at stake.
The County's appropriation for our public schools
has not kept up with the growth in student enrollment or
inflation! Since 2008-09,
Inflation has risen by
8%
Student enrollment has grown by
10.9%
WCPSS
employee portion of family health coverage has risen
39%
The County appropriation has fallen by
6%
In the past year,
WCPSS has seen a 42% one-year increase in teacher
resignations. We must treat teaching as a
respected profession. We have many top-notch
teachers--the most nationally board certified
teachers in the nation, and nearly half
have a master's degree!
The School Board's
proposed budget asks for a $39 million increase in the
County appropriation to help meet two important
goals:
WCPSS will have the
highest local investment for students in
NC
WCPSS will pay
its teachers at the national
average
The requested funding
will go to:
A 3.5% salary increase
for all WCPSS employees
K -12 literacy
initiatives
Expanded pre-K
services
Intervention
coordinators for targeted high schools
Opening a new high
school...and more

REQUESTED
We hope to see you on Monday
at 2:00 PM!
