Dear Neighbors,
It's come to our attention that there was a problem with the video stream
during last night's East CAC meeting just before the Animal Control officer
updated us on the situation involving the St. Bernard on Rumson Road that's
been involved in multiple attacks on other dogs. I am happy to share my
notes to bring everyone up to date on that.
The officer said that her department's case against the dog involved two
dogs attacked on the greenway, and two other incidents involving attacks on
dogs in their backyard (in one case, one dog, and in another, two). They
have completed a dangerous-dog report on the St. Bernard, whose name is
Honey, and the case now goes to a judge. Since Animal Control filed the
paperwork in the case, they have gotten three more reports of Honey running
at large.
If the judge declares the dog dangerous, the owners have the right to
appeal and would get a hearing. If the dog is deemed a danger, the owners
would still be able to keep the animal, but when unattended outside it
would have to be kept behind a chain-link enclosure with a locked gate.
(The attacks occurred after the dog broke off its tether.) The owners would
also have to muzzle the dog when outside.
Someone asked who pays the injured dogs' vet bills. The officer said that's
a matter for the civil courts. The officer also noted that Animal Control
does not have the power to simply take away dogs in situations like this,
and she said it is very rare for an animal to be seized from an owner.
Since the problem with Honey arose, Animal Control has gotten a lot more
calls about strays in the area. They are asking people to please continue
to make those calls. They also encouraged people to snap pictures of animal
problems to share with officers when possible.
To reach Animal Control, call 919-831-6311, or 911 if it's an emergency.
Hope that's helpful,
Sue Sturgis

I have a 40 or so pound tan dog that was running along Glascock around the
Raleigh Blvd intersection (the side farther away from Stevens Road/not at
Glascock Manor). It must have broken free from its lead, which is still
attached. He is sweet and seemed accustomed to being in the car. I drove
around that area for 30 minutes or so asking people if he looked familiar
but no dice. Please let me know if you hear of anyone looking for him.
One of the firemen is sending out a message to the CAC; I'm not on that
list.

>
> ALL,
> From November 21st – December 18th the South East District has seen 99 residential burglaries. Of those 99 residential burglaries the East CAC was a victim of 22 of those burglaries. With that being said only 4 of those burglaries took place since you as a community have been calling in suspicious persons, leaving me your vacation dates, and allowing us to use your residences. Since we’ve teamed up I have targeted burglaries in the area which began around December 5th. Over all I think 4 burglaries in a 2 week period, compared to 18 in the previous two weeks, is a very impressive decrease and it is due in part to the folks who live in the CAC being more proactive. Thank you again!
>
> Many of the burglaries that I have noticed are happening along Milburnie Rd, Glascock St, and Colleton Rd. Most of the houses are corner houses at intersections where it’s not unusual for someone to stop for a brief period of time. This doesn’t mean the rest of the community can let their guard down it just means that those who live in the areas I mentioned should be more aware of who is stopping and going in their areas. Remember 911 is a good tool so let us determine whether or not someone is just lost or is casing your homes. Remember to always share info on suspicious persons and vehicles with your neighbors and on the list serve. You all do a great job at that anyway but I just wanted to send a reminder!

Has anyone noticed Animal Control patrolling the neighborhood or being more
responsive since our SeeClickFix report?

Neighbors,
We have a 110 gallon glass tank that could be used for a terrarium or a home for reptiles, etc. It CANNOT be used as an aquarium. Free to anyone who will pick it up. Hate to see it going in the trash, it can still be used! Email or call (919) 833-4838.
Gayle
In case anyone in our neighborhood is interested in joining the Longview
Gardens folks, or forming our own group(s) for regular walks. I love this
idea!

Hey all,
I think a great thing to do would be to have Walking Clubs that walk at
odd hours of the day. With more people (neighbors) out on the streets
there is probably going to be less crime. Not to mention that we'll get
some good exercise!
I'm currently unemployed and have the ability to walk just about any
time on any day. I'm going to start on the Stevens/Locke/Derby/Chatham
route and plan to try to do that every day - at least as much as I can.
If anyone wants to join me or to do the same in your part of the
neighborhood, do it! It would also be good to have several different
people/groups walking the same paths at different times of the day. More
coverage = less chance for a burglary to happen.
Like Officer Krysko said at the last CAC meeting, this time of year is
prime for the picking. So let's get out there and tell burglars "NO! Not
in our neighborhood!"

I drove through the CAC for pretty much the whole day and noticed many
residences where no vehicles were in the driveways but the curtains to
large front windows were open. I could plainly see what was in the house
just by driving by. We refer to these situations as
crimes-of-opportunity so please be cognizant of the little things like
open curtain or blinds when leaving your home and locking windows and
back or side doors also.
If you are leaving for the holidays please send me an email, personally
off the list serve, with the dates you will be gone and I will advise
the patrol officers of your absence.
On a good note I personally received several calls from neighbors about
suspicious persons and thefts but I also heard a lot of calls go out in
the CAC because you are all calling in to report suspicious persons,
vehicles, and activities. *_I wanted to tell all those that called in to
911 or me that you’re doing a good job and keep it up._* The only way we
can prevent more burglaries, and other crimes in our area, is to
continue calling in suspicious activity!! Thank you.

FYI, see message from Office Krysko below. Be vigilant! Call 911 and have
an officer come check things out if you see anyone walking through the
neighborhood you don't recognize, if you see anyone acting suspiciously,
etc. Let's get the message out to these folks that this is a neighborhood
full of nosy people! :)

Just today a resident of Remington Road near Powell Elementary told me
there was a break-in along that street recently.
