I don't know if anyone saw today, but our elderly neighbor got robbed. She is almost 70 years old and deaf, lives alone with no family to care for her, and someone knocked on her door, knocked her down and stole her keys, wallet, money, checks, everything. This was in the middle of the day...around noon.
Her neighbors, Carol and KC, have taken it upon themselves to help her....realizing she has no one looking after her. They have called Meals on Wheels, the SS office, her bank, etc. This woman needs our help. Her name is Ellen, she's very shy and a recluse (for obvious reasons) and is slow to trust, but she needs our help. Her house is a bit in disarray, she doesn't have much food, her phone for the deaf doesn't seem to be working. Their pastor is changing the locks on her door tonight.
She signs ok, not sure if her reading is great.
Carol and KC live at 2476 Milburnie Rd, Ellen lives directly next door, to the right (looking from the road). They are stepping up to make sure she is safe and taken care of since she has no one.
It would be very nice if we could have more officers on the street near her house, in the day time as well as the night....they robbed her in broad daylight.
Also, Matt, could you please add Carol Baez to the community watch email list, she asked me to have you put her on. She doesn't have internet, but she gets email on her phone. She would like to know the dates of the community watch meetings as well. Her email is bronxlatina1966(a)yahoo.com
Miss Ellen is the epitome of what community is all about....she needs our help and support and protection.

Hey neighbors,
We had an organizing meeting for the First Annual Culpepper
Grill ‘n Chill at my house tonight. Thanks to everyone who came out. Here’s
what we came up with.
The Grill ‘n Chill is going to be a low key potluck among
neighbors. Some of our gracious neighbors have offered to lend their grills to
the effort, and another neighbor is bringing cornhole and volleyball. Thank
you!
We need some volunteers to help by bringing the last few
items on the Grill ‘n Chill Items List below. We also need volunteers to help
out with cleanup. Don’t be shy. Just reply all and put your name below one of
the items.
Most everything else is “bring your own”. Bring items to grill
and/or side items. Sharing is encouraged but not mandatory. Bring what you want
to eat and drink. We’ll have some coolers and, of course, the grills. If you
want to bring stuff to share, give a shout out to this email and let people
know. Just in case we end up with 200 hotdogs or something…J
Let’s also try to bring our own dishes and utensils. The
less we through in the garbage, the easier cleanup will be.
One last note. We should
remember this is a City park, so please leave the booze and guns at
home J This is a kid friendly event. All neighbors are welcome to this area get together.
If you have a suggestion or idea, please reply to the email.
Thanks.
Regards,Matt Leary

Hey neighbors,
We'll be having an organizing meeting tomorrow night, July 2, at 7:00. We'll meet at my place, 500 N. King Charles Rd. I've received a little feedback from people. One idea for dividing up the list of stuff to bring is by using people's last names. So the people with last names ending in A-F would bring on type of item, G-L would bring something else... We can talk about this more tomorrow night. After the meeting tomorrow, we'll send out an update to the group with the gameplan. Another idea I received was that everyone bring their own plates and silver to reduce the amount of trash we generate. All good ideas. Let's sort them out tomorrow night. I look forward to seeing you.
Sorry for the short notice. If you can't make it tomorrow night and want to help organize, shoot me an email. Thanks.

Hi All,
At the June ECAC meeting, representatives from the City of Raleigh
Stormwater Utility (Public Works Department) presented on stream
restoration work that will commence this fall in our area. The project
will take ~2-years to complete and will include stream reaches that
run along Bertie and Locke in the Longview Park subdivision. One
significant component to the project (download full plans here:
goo.gl/CiWyp) is the installation of a Gabion wall
(http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Gabion) near the intersection of Bertie
and Locke where the stream channel is confined by Bertie on one side
and Enloe's football field/ bleachers on the other.
Please let me know if you have any questions or concerns. Todd Rall
(Todd.Rall(a)raleighnc.gov) is the Senior Stormwater Engineer on the
project and he is maintaining a mailing list for project updates.

Hi neighbors,
I was just looking at the extended forecast (I realize I'm probably the
last person in Raleigh to do so) and it looks like we're going to have some
unbearable weather for the next four or five days. Everyone, please be
careful!
- *Stay hydrated* - drink PLENTY of *WATER *daily. Even if you think you're
not sweating, you probably are and dehydration is not fun (and it can be
very dangerous).
- *Stay out of the sun*. Become a shade seeker!
- If you are able, please remember to *check on your sick and/or elderly
neighbors*. I know that there are quite a few people with window units for
A/C and sometimes in extreme heat those aren't enough. If you are able,
maybe you could invite neighbors over to stay cool. I'll start the
invitation - anyone is welcome to come hang out with us in the heat of the
day! (We don't have many amenities, but we do have central air!)
- Also remember to *keep pets cool* and if you have a birdbath, please try
to keep water in it.
Be cool,
Ginger

Hey neighbors,
I have owed you all an update from our last meeting for a couple of weeks. I have been a little backlogged due to a hectic work schedule, but here's an update from our last meeting.
We had a good turnout for the last meeting, close to 30. Thanks to everyone who could make it. The agenda is attached for your review. The theme of the meeting, volunteering. You too can help with the neighborhood watch! It's easy.
We reviewed the city grant that the LPCW received. We have received funding for window decals and web hosting services. I am going to be meeting with Charlene at the City to get our decals ordered and the web hosting services purchased sometime next week. I'll keep you apprised of the progress.
Sheri Cassidy gave us an update of the Adopt-a-stream program and the stream cleanup in April. The LPCW adopted a stream!! We adopted the strip along Locke. Be on the lookout for updates on future stream cleanup efforts.
We also reviewed the announcements. Please see the attached agenda for those.
I am also starting a simple little thing that I hope will catch on. It's called Be on the Lookout. The idea is simple, just let your neighbors something for which they should be on the lookout. Places where kids tend to play in the street. Places where dogs dart out into the street.
Obstacles in the sidewalk. Other such stuff. I have to stress that anything that is of serious consequence should go through the police, but this is just something simple. For example, I have three "be on the lookouts" for you today.
Be on the lookout for:- Kids playing near Locke and King Charles. - Kids playing near King Charles and Surry- Kids playing near the intersection of Culpepper and Milburnie
When you're driving through these areas, be on the lookout so everyone stays safe. Simple, to the point.
I had a note to report the contact number for reporting utility poles missing copper grounding wires - to report a utility pole where the copper grounding wire has been removed, call Progress Energy at 919.508.5400 and report a "damaged pole."
We voted on a couple of items. 1. We voted to adopt the area maps as shown on the links below. 2. We voted to pursue a signage policy that includes static cling window decals and signs at the various entrances to the neighborhood. I will collect information about neighborhood entrance signs and report back to the neighbors.
Lastly, we talked about having a summer social activity. We decided to have a cookout at the Culpepper Park. That's right, we're going to get together and have a good time at the Culpepper Park. I'm really looking forward to it. I don't think we decided on a name for the event, but I'm leaning towards The Culpepper Jam. Again the idea is simple (are you catching a theme with me), let's hang out and grill a few hamburgers, hotdogs and veggie burgers and socialize as a neighborhood. The idea seemed to be popular at the meeting, so I'm hoping it will catch on now. Here's the skinny on it.

I don't anticipate needing to block off the street or anything. I hope we'll have a good crew to help clean up afterwards, and I know we're all going to have a good time. This gathering is about us, the neighbors, not me, the community watch guy. Let's all get together and have a good time. What do you guys think? Feedback is encouraged :)
We're going to circulate a list of stuff to bring (below). Reply to the group what you are going to bring so we can keep track. Feel free to make suggestions.
Here is the list of items for the party as I see it so far. This is a totally open list. Please suggest what you like. All suggestions are welcome.
- grill- charcoal and starter- fire eXtinguisher- cooler- ice- cups, plates, plasticware- trash cans, bags- cleanup crew- condiments: ketchup, mustard, relish, mayo, etc.- burger buns- hotdog buns- burgers- hotdogs- other grillables: poultry, veggie burgers, other- corn on the cob- sodas- chips- side items- desserts- bug spray, bug candles, etc.- music- someone to speak to the neighbors around the park to let the know about the gathering and to invite them
Kind regards,Matt LearyChairperson, LPCW
