Subject: From Murphy to Manteo: Landscapes by Chris Wilson opening 1st Friday
Join us First Friday for the opening of our
Featured Exhibit:
From Murphy to Manteo:
An Artist's Scenic Journey
Studies, sketches and preliminary drawings
by J. Chris Wilson
September 6-29
Study, View from Walnut Hollow, Burke County
Study, Whitewater Falls, Transylvania County
ABOUT THIS SHOW:
In 2007, NC artist, J. Chris Wilson undertook the enormous project of painting a "portrait" of NC comprised of 100 landscape paintings of scenes and vistas along Highway 64 that runs from Murphy to Manteo. "I set out to expand the scale and complexity of my vision for post-abstract Southern realist painting and create an epic panorama from the Blue Ridge Mountains to the Outer Banks." He is nearly finished and has over 50 works currently on display in various sites around the Capital.
The Nature Art Gallery is pleased to be exhibiting 30 or so of the studies, sketches and preliminary drawings he did in preparation for painting his very large landscape canvases. All these studies and sketches will be for sale.
The History Museum is showing a dozen of the finished oil paintings in their lobby. The Departments of Environment and Natural Resources and Cultural Resources are also displaying paintings and others are on view at the State Library and the House Chamber of the NC Legislative Building.
This is a very exciting project on a grand scale and we suggest coming here to view thestudies and sketches and then taking a walking tour of the Capital to see how they inform the paintings. We will provide information about all
the exhibition sites and hours for each here at the Gallery
for interested patrons.
ABOUT THE ARTIST:
Wilson has been painting the North Carolina landscape for over 35 years. He has also been continuously exhibiting his work during the same period. He was on the faculty of Barton College 1974-2012 and is now professor emeritus and artist-in-residence there. visit his website to learn more

Bring a Scorpion Expert to Bugfest!
The Museum is asking for your help in bringing scorpion expert Dr. Lauren Esposito for a keynote presentation and to host an exhibit of live scorpions at Bugfest!
This year's "theme arthropod" is the scorpion, so Dr. Esposito will be an awesome addition to BugFest. She is an evolutionary biologist working as a postdoctoral research fellow at the University of California at Berkeley. She is broadly trained as a scorpiologist, but most of her current research focuses on arachnids (spiders, scorpions and their kin) in the Caribbean biodiversity hotspot.
Please visit http://r20.rs6.net/tn.jsp?e=001iugMb4EimnK9BsJxCPAQADFTbvOFklLtnQTrGl781cc-… and donate today to make her visit a reality. And please pass this note on to any friends/family you think may be interested. Thank you!

Subject: Venita Peyton for Mayor
Good morning!
As you know, freedom is not free. Neither is change. Change is critical when we see wrong and find no one willing to challenge it. While doing nothing is comfortable, it is always costly to someone in the end.
We have an immediate need to raise $5000 to tell voters the value of changing how the City of Raleigh serves its citizens.. As you ponder why you should care, let me ask you this:
*Did you know that the right people in local office can impact state and federal decisions?
Your support is critical. The past 7 days have required answering extensive questionnaires and interviews from the business community to the environmentalists. Shortly the debates begin.
People who know what they want have been financially supporting candidates for years and seem richly rewarded. Some expect change by playing the lottery, while others seem paralyzed by fear. What about you? Are you willing to take a stand?
Our campaign message is simple. Raleigh should equitably spend its time and vast resources throughout the City. Our thriving downtown includes free bus rides between restaurants, while other communities can't keep a grocery store (but can get stuck with another McDonald's). Economic development has meant showing up to cut ribbons with companies who've found us on their own. Those who claim our employment picture has brightened seem oblivious to the head of households who still crowd job fairs and pay weekly rates of $250 or more to live in motels.
Again, your support is critical. Please add your voice by writing your check to the Committee to Elect Venita Peyton. Our treasurer, Trevena Garel (also a busy working woman), has completed extensive campaign training. She and other campaign volunteers (including myself) are willing to pick up your donation if necessary. Her email is tkgarel(a)gmail.com.
Again, your support is needed today. Because today is all we have.
Venita Peyton, Candidate for Mayor of Raleigh
